Are you watching Cucumber and Banana yet?
Logo TV has been running episodes of the popular British series and you should be watching! From the creator of Queer as Folk and the writer who rebooted Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies new series comes as two intertwined shows: the main Cucumber storyline with side stories on Banana (a third online documentary series called Tofu also ran in the UK).
As one can expect from Russell T. Davies, the writing is exceptional and the storyline over the show is very moving; this is real drama one expects from British television. The main story follows middle-aged gay man Henry (Vincent Franklin) and his boyfriend of nine years Lance (Cyril Nri) as he struggle to move on when their relationship falls apart. Henry’s life shatters in the span of one day, and he launches himself into a new life surrounded by younger 20-something gays and their dramas. The show also stars the adorable Freddie Fox, who everyone should get to know as he’s likely going to be a big star (think a blonder, cuter and more effeminate Eddie Redmayne).
There were a few Cucumber episodes later in the 8-episode season that brought me to tears, especially number 6 and its impact in episodes 7 & 8. US viewers can watch Cucumber online at LogoTV.
In case you’re wondering, the title of the three shows refers to a urological scale of erection hardness: tofu, peeled banana, banana and finally cucumber (which is explained in the opening show).
