Logitech Ultrathin keyboard cover for iPad
The iPad features a versatile onscreen keyboard but while we are still adjusting to this new human-device interaction auxiliary keyboards are becoming popular. Apple made a gamble going with the software keyboard, ditching hard keys for the much more flexible touch version (flexible because it can be localized to any language and purpose). Microsoft, well known for being allergic to taking a risk has chosen to create two keyboard solutions for their Surface tab. It really comes down to what you intend to use your slate for, and the external keyboard allows for the most choice.
There are some really clunky cover & keyboard accessories on the market which increase the thickness and weight of your iPad, and wrap the tab inside a hard to access sleeve. The Logitech Ultrathin cover wisely provides a full keyboard and kickstand without adding much bulk to the iPad, and by utilizing the cover magnetics in the iPad 2 and new iPad, the cover can be removed very quickly when you don’t need the keyboard.
The Ultrathin keyboard boosts an aluminum back, Bluetooth connection with your iPad and again thanks to the iPad cover magnetics, it turns on and off automatically when the cover is opened. Even though it’s only 8mm thin, the keyboard is functional and moderately comfortable; not a perfect desktop replacement as it lies flat but not too cramped. The top row of function keys give you quick access to some important iPad functions so you reduce the amount of times your hands leave the keyboard however it’s no perfect replacement for many of the touch interactions.
One good feature with the kickstand is the option to present your iPad in portrait OR landscape. The built-in kickstand on the Microsoft Surface seems like an awkward gimmick forcing the user to only use landscape mode, and the dock on Apple’s iPad keyboard only gives the option of portrait.
Basically when you are in typing mode, your long emails or that novel you’re writing, then the Logitech keyboard is perfect, assuming you are also needing the portability. Buy it for that reason alone. But if you find yourself typing a lot at your work or home desk and don’t need to set up an office on the train, plane or coffee shop, then this Logitech keyboard may just be to much function for the cost. At least there’s no reason to complain about the ultrathin keyboard’s thickness, weight or battery usage (so far).
