Burger King releases Proud Whopper for pride and a boycott
Just for San Francisco Gay Pride 2014, Burger King introduced a new burger: the Proud Whopper. What made this burger different? It may have been the clever marketing and rainbow foil wrapper used to show the fast-food companies support for the gay community. However with the slogan “We are all the same inside”, Burger King proves how Americans love to over-react to positive and inclusive messaging by starting a #boycottburgerking campaign.
Released with a video (below), the burger was meant to celebrate San Francisco pride. Instead Americans have taken to the internet, including Twitter, to vent their views against the gay community and Burger King. Check out the hashtag #boycottburgerking for some interesting insight into the mind of many Americans.

The downtown Burger King outlet sold the pride burgers over San Francisco’s pride weekend and also handed out over 50,000 rainbow colored iconic Burger King crowns, seen worn by parade marchers and watchers alike. According to Burger King, proceeds from the special Whopper sandwich were to be donated to Burger King’s McLamore Foundation for scholarships benefiting LGBT high school seniors.
